INNER PIECE VACCINE
To explore the concept of social media & instant gratification as a worldwide pandemic and the notion of administrating jigsaw puzzles as the vaccine. The Inner-piece vaccine will be a two-part campaign, distributed by the Department of Social Media & Mental Health.
Context
Too much social media and instant gratification has been proven to be detrimental to peoples mental health. The worst cases are seen within Generation Z (1996-2011) who suffer serious side effects such as depression, addiction, the inability to self-regulate or even suicide.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic this has only gotten worse. The younger generations now find themselves addicted to social media as their main source of gratification, lacking the achievements that they would normally obtain in the outside world

Jigsaw puzzles are a form of delayed gratification that requires the brain to be active and dedicated to the task. It is an activity that gives people real reward and gratification and can be used in any home. However, I noticed that there wasnāt a lot of modern choices of jigsaw puzzle designs for the younger ages despite the increase of popularity during the Covid-19 pandemic. For my project, I wanted to modernise jigsaws for Generation Z and use them to influence people to spend less time on social media.
Once establishing that I wanted to modernise jigsaw puzzles, I then wanted to create the task of distributing it to Gen Zās in a way that would reflect on the current struggles of the worldwide pandemic and the rise of social media usage. The following data is how I designed this concept. ā¦
The branding concept for the Department of Social Media & Mental Health uses the well-known visuals for pharmacy and technology. The colours are blue and pink as they are also commonly associated with social media (like and love icons.
There will be three versions of the Inner-piece vaccine, all encouraging the puzzler to spend less time on social media. Since it is a two part vaccine, the patient will receive 500 pieces in the first dose and another 500 in the next, making up a 1000 piece jigsaw by the end of this process.
The following data shows the components a typical patient would receive when prescribed the Inner-piece Vaccine:
Appointment Letter:
The patient will first receive a letter detailing when and where they will receive their vaccination. Other items such as an information booklet, appointment card and a promotional flyer will also be included inside to ensure the patient knows all about why they are receiving the Inner-piece vaccine.
Patient Card:
Like the cards you typically see for the Covid-19 vaccination, these cards will be given to patients to keep track of their appointments. This encourages Generation Z to write down their information rather than be influenced to go on their phone and type it.
Promotional Flyer:
A flyer advertising the Department of Social Media & Mental Health
Information Booklet:
This information booklet will hold all the information the patient needs to understand why they are receiving the Inner-piece vaccine.
If they require more information the book encourages them to talk to someone rather than go online to a website or text on their phone.
Receiving the vaccine:
Once the patient arrives at their vaccination appointment they will receive a pharmaceutical bag to take home. This will have the required dose of the Inner-piece vaccine inside.
Prescription:
The prescription is there to hold all the patients information and what dose of the vaccine they are receiving. This is to ensure the patient gets the right dose at the right appointment.
Packaging:
Due to each jigsaw puzzle being a sentence long, it was decided that it would be easier to sort the packaging into codes. They will include the name of the Inner-piece vaccine (IP-) followed by the name of the jigsaw (MTMM/ MOBGM/ TABFYOS) and then number of dose (.1/2).
As previously mentioned, the patient will receive half of a 1000 piece jigsaw. They will collect the other half as a second dose within two weeks.
The box follows a tuck top with a snap, lock bottom. This will allow the jigsaw puzzles to sit well in the box without any falling out. The box should fit comfortably in the patients hand.
Support Stickers:
Once finishing both doses of the Inner-piece vaccine, the patient will then receive a campaign support sticker.
User testing:
The Inner-piece vaccine then went through user testing to see whether the outcomes did indeed better the puzzlers mental health. The following images is an example of a patient using the IP-MTMM vaccine.
Results:
Each participant found that by taking part in this activity they consciously chose to spend less time online and focus more on their mental health. Having a finished jigsaw puzzle made them feel happy and accomplished and one participant in particular noted that they later framed their puzzle in their room, proving that modernising the jigsaws design does encourage Gen Zās to participate more.
The initial dose of the vaccine was successful in gauging their interest and intriguing them to wait for the second. This led to the participants getting that hit of dopamine when finishing the second dose and successfully understanding delayed gratification for future behaviours. Each participant also helped one another finish their puzzles, meaning the vaccine has the potential to be given in groups and still work by bettering their mental health.
