World Wide Napier Magazine
Brief: To rebrand and design a foreign languages magazine.
World Wide Napier, a magazine managed by the language department at Edinburgh Napier University, launched a competition to revamp its magazine and identity. My design was selected for implementation, resulting in the creation of a simplistic brand that can be used in various ways within the magazine. The new brand features a bold font for the title, ensuring its visibility regardless of the image used on the cover. The circle around the text represents the world, aligning with the magazine’s languages theme.
The theme of this issue is ‘Places,’ so I chose a photograph of a city with a fish bowl effect. The new brand logo complements the image, creating a visually appealing 3D effect for the reader. The client then requested a structured and simple design for the information panel at the bottom of the cover to maintain continuity across all issues. The back cover primarily focuses on social media icons to facilitate readers’ access to previous issues online.
One aspect of this project involved working with large texts in foreign languages. Editing the magazine presented a challenge in ensuring that all the text was in the original language without an English translation. To address this, I collaborated closely with the languages department head to review and correct each student’s text. Each language (French, Spanish, and German) was divided into chapters of colour, making it easy for readers to flip through the content. Each student was introduced in a classic book chapter format, featuring a circular icon of the author at the top centre. The icon was accompanied by either a full-page image or a half-page panel with an image chosen by the student.
